“Did a… film with him down in Piedras Negras, Lone Star. I remember the audition for that. It was at a time where I was not getting the role. I would get the second, third, or fourth callback, but never get the role. I was getting a little heady about things, and I met him and he hadn’t quite cast me in it, but he was, like… met to tell me he kind of wanted me in it. And we were talking about this character, Buddy Deeds, and I was talking to him about it, he was like, “Yeah.” He goes, “Now just kick back and talk to me with your feet up on the table, like this is your place.” And I did. And whatever I did, he goes, “That’s it. Want to do the movie?” And we did. It’s also the set where, at 1 a. M. Full moon night, I got a phone call during a break in scenes, and it was Joel Schumacher and John Grisham calling me to say, “Do you want to play Jake Brigance in A Time to Kill?” And I said, “[beep] yeah.” And I took off running into the desert until I broke a sweat, dropped down on both knees and put a hand up to shake the moon’s hand to say thank you. And right next to that we have Lone Star. We know that one, with Mr. Sayles. We already got Matewan of his.”
