“Stagecoach meant a lot to me. There's the opening shot of Johnny Ringo, or the Ringo Kid, is that his name? Wayne's, Wayne's character, where you see him for the first time on the side road. The Stagecoach is pulling up and you push in on John Wayne. And it's kind of obviously shot, in the middle of all this realism outside, it's kind of obviously shot on a stage, because I'm sure they got it wrong and he has to cock his gun and appear perfectly, so they took it and did it on the artificial stage so the depth of field is really small. And they dollied forward toward him, and he's out of focus, and out of focus, and he gets more and more out of focus, out of focus, and they get into his close-up and he's just—bing!—in sharpness. And I nearly fell off my seat the first time I saw it. It's like, that's brilliant, that is so... I'm, you know, I just imagine being in Ford's screening room and he sees that, he says, "That's good. That's good."”
