Johnnie To

“[Translated] I see one right away. This is a movie that I really love. It's called Roma. This is... I'm not sure why I suddenly decided to go to the theater to watch this movie, but I felt truly happy watching it. After seeing this movie. I realized the deep connection between people, and how you never know when you might have to pay the highest price. This movie is in black and white. It's pretty good. Let's set it aside for now.”

“[Translated] Next, this one. Wow, this one... This is a classic. If you're a filmmaker, especially if you're studying film in university, if you haven't seen Dekalog, I think it would be a great loss, because I learned a lot from it. This is a great director. Krzysztof Kieślowski.”

“[Translated] This one is even better. This is great stuff. I remembered this was a black-and-white film. It's called Harakiri. When it comes to Japanese cinema, aside from Akira Kurosawa, my favorite is director Masaki Kobayashi. This film is really... Wow, chilling. Chilling to the bone. Anyone who hasn't seen it must watch it.”

“[Translated] This one is amazing. You know what it is without me even saying There's no need to explain.”

“[Translated] All right, lastly, Raging Bull. Where's Raging Bull? I choose many black-and-white films. Why do I keep picking black-and-white? It's like I... In the future, I'll make a black-and-white movie. Good movie. Martin Scorsese.”

“[Translated] And... Martin Scorsese I've never seen this one before. I'll have to watch it when I get back. This is my favorite director. He's like a god. He's the... He's my mentor. My teacher.”

“[Translated] There's more. And here's another one of his, a very famous movie. This one really surprised me back then, Three Colors Trilogy: Red, White, Blue. I highly recommend this movie. Good.”
