“Wanda. I really have to thank Criterion about this, for this, because I didn't know about this film. And to have it, to bring it back, was such a treat. I didn't know that Barbara Loden, I know her as an actress, but I didn't know that she was a director. And this was such a, it was a labor of love, and over many years, and coming back to it, and being so, so focused and persistent. I can't imagine, I mean it's hard to get a film made now, what it was like then as a female director without any track record. And she came out with a masterpiece. I mean, I read the reviews and saw the documentary on the DVD, and what was extraordinary about it was just the commitment. And that at a time in her life where you think she had so many offers, that this is what she decided to do with her life, is to make this film about a woman who was invisible, and she made her more than visible: viable. You really care about her and feel for this, this kind of woman who was a pawn to men's schemes. And, but gee, you'd think, well, why would I feel for somebody like that? But she's so, so lost, so at sea, and Barbara Loden gives her voice. Great film.”
