“Scenes from a Marriage. I did a talk at Brooklyn Academy of Music and I introduced John Singleton's, to me, one of his great films, Baby Boy. And one thing that was interesting is that John Singleton was at the, the Canadian Film Centre, and they asked him, thinking it was maybe in 2004, if he passed away, what would be his favorite movie, and it was Baby Boy. And I mention this with Bergman because sometimes John Singleton was looking for the truth of character, and in Baby Boy you see a lot of tension, you see maybe some violence with the characters, especially with the relationship between male and female, but you see that in this, too. So it's not just, you know, sometimes we get pigeonholed, Black directors get pigeonholed, and we think the violence is just about our culture, but this shows that their marriage is just as tenuous, and sometimes just as violent, and emotionally violent.”
