“On the Waterfront. What's unique about—I had dinner with Elia Kazan when I was 24 and had just done my first movie. And we were having ice cream, me and him, in Stockholm. And of course I had to ask the question that we all want to hear at that age, which is: what advice would you, would you give a young filmmaker? And so I asked Elia Kazan, so what advice would you give a young filmmaker? And he said, "My advice to you is do it your way." Which of course had a meaning, specific meaning when I was 24, but I also understood that it would have the same meaning, but a different way, the older I got. And it's been the only thing I can ever give myself, because I realized that he was saying "do it your way" meant that your way will change over the years, because it is a bizarre industry, and just every time remember to do it your way. So that was a very important piece of advice from Elia. Thank you very much.”
