Sofia Coppola & Marc Jacobs

“I’ll start with this one, Grey Gardens. Always a favorite. Yes.”

“Loves of a Blonde. Have you ever seen that? No, I’ve never seen it. It’s really cool. It’s an early Miloš Forman movie. Oh, really? Yeah, maybe you need to take that and see it. Great. I’d love to see that one. It’s great.”

“I have to have All That Jazz. I’ve seen All That Jazz probably 20 times.”

“And The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant. You know how much I love this movie. The most incredible visuals. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it all the way through. Every frame is like a fashion image. It’s so incredible. I mean, I’ve seen Petra von Kant at least 20 times. I’m so excited I’ve never watched it all the way through.”

“Paris is Burning. I love that movie. So good. I’ve watched it a million times, I know, I want another Criterion. So a million and one won’t kill me. I thought Cosi needs to see that. Do you want to take this one? Well, do you have one? Yeah. You do? Okay, we don’t… I’m sure I have it. Here, you take that one for the girls. I’m so excited. Amazing.”

“You picked Female Trouble. Yeah, I did. Again, a classic, in a way.”

“Oh, and close by is Klute. Another classic. Another extraordinary fashion movie.”

“Look what I found. Another all-time favorite, The Virgin Suicides. I’m so proud… Have you ever seen it? I’m so proud to have a Criterion. Yeah.”

“Here’s your After Hours, I think. That was something you were interested in. I love this movie, but I haven’t seen it in a long time, so I’m really excited to revisit it. New York and big lofts in the ’80s.”

“Oh, this movie. Have you ever seen this movie? No. It’s a Bergman movie, Summer with Monika. It was just on the Criterion Channel one night and I thought, “We’ll just put it on to fall asleep to.” And then I couldn’t take her eyes off it. It’s kind of this love affair with this bad girl and it was really– I really love it.”

“I love this movie, I Knew Her Well. It’s Stefania Sandrelli at her most beautiful. It’s really good. It’s a young kind of model girl and the way it looks, it’s so stylish. It’s really inspiring. Okay. I love that movie, if you haven’t seen it. I’m glad to discover a new stylish film. Yes.”

“What about this one, Sofia? You pulled out… Oh, yeah. This one… I love these: The Apu Trilogy. I think I’ve seen the first one and the last one. It’s the same character through his life, and he starts as a little boy and then him as an adult. Do you want to take it? Yes. Another recommendation from Sofia Coppola, ladies and gentlemen.”

“Oh, there. Belle de Jour. Oh, yeah. We have a clip in our doc from that, for her style. There’s a… Yeah. Yves Saint Laurent, beautiful dressing of Catherine Deneuve.”

“And this one, which I love: Flow. It’s, like, my favorite movie. I haven’t seen it. You have to see it. I’m so excited. It was kind of the exception in my list because all the other ones were fashion inspiration… all inspired me in terms of fashion. But this one just is the most… Touching. Beautiful… I can’t even tell you how much I love this movie. Just so beautiful and sweet. Each of the animals is… They express themselves, but they’ve got the behavior of each of the animals so perfectly. It’s just incredible.”

“Oh, this I was excited about. I’m a big fan of Sakamoto, who I knew about from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence as a teenager. Oh, yeah, Ryuichi Sakamoto. And they have… It’s his last concert that he filmed at the end of his life, which seems really beautiful, I haven’t seen.”

“Did you ever see all of these? It’s Totally F***ed Up, Doom Generation, and Nowhere. I’ve only seen Doom Generation. Should I see the rest of them? Yeah. I love that actor who’s in them. James Duval? Is that his name? Yes. I’m getting a thumbs-up. But it was so good about… Doom Generation, I thought it was so interesting and cool and strong, wild. And Nowhere was really good. Those are like period movies now. I know, I know.”

“Oh, I love The Heiress. I just watched this recently. I won’t take it because I have it. It’s Monty Clift as a grifter and an innocent heiress, Olivia de Havilland. I thought it’s ripe for a modern-day remake. I wonder if you’d be into it. It’s… You won’t like the clothes because it’s 1860s… Oh. …oldy-timey. But her performance is incredible because she goes from really innocent to… to not in a really cool way. So that’s cool, just for her performance.”

“This movie so disturbed me. Oh my God. That movie was so upsetting. It’s so, so disturbing. I wish I’d never seen it. Me too. We’re talking about Funny Games. It is terrifying. We’re talking about this. But don’t watch it. No. Unless you want to be terrified. Yeah. It is really upsetting. Really upsetting, and I… I’ve seen some pretty horrible movies, or horror movies, and they didn’t stay with me the way that did. Me too. I thought, “That could happen to me.” And it was so… It was just relentless, just… Evil. Evil. That was terrifying. I wish I could erase that from my memory. Me too.”

“But on a brighter note, Fast Times. Fast Times. Sean Penn as Spicoli, one of the best characters ever. Ever. It’s so cool that you guys have this one.”

“I love The Grifters. We don’t need to take it, but… Yeah, it’s so great. Anjelica Huston. Another great… Oh my God, I love her in it. It’s so cool. So good. I’ve seen that one many times.”
