Eclipse Series 24: The Actuality Dramas of Allan King

“And then yeah, this Allan King collection. I'm Canadian, so I thought I should put a Canadian in there, and I wanted to just find a collection that matched my shirt perfectly. That's odd, actually. But anyway, yeah, this whole collection is incredible, and we were talking about Come On Children, which is a really great film with great music too, Arlo Guthrie music, and Warrendale is also a great one, but the one that really, really got me is A Married Couple, which is so funny and so heartbreaking at the same time. But I mean, the language of this couple is incredibly comical and feels written almost, the way they're talking, you know? The husband is so kind of sardonic, and at the same time you're watching this real thing, which is this marriage disintegrating in front in front of a camera, and maybe partly because of the camera. You kind of get a sense that they're like not able to hide anymore from their problems. And yeah, it's sort of like a real-life Scenes from a Marriage in a way, kind of feels like that. You're watching them try and fail at putting the pieces back together. It's a really great, great collection. Yeah, those were the ones I was going to pick.”

“This is The Actuality Dramas of Allan King. The one I've seen is A Married Couple, which is one of the most stunning documentaries I've ever seen in my life. It's, I think it's 1969, 1969, and you're watching a couple basically get divorced. And it's an era where there is no real television and people don't really understand what it means to have a camera crew with them all the time, and so they let the camera, they forget the camera's there. From an acting standpoint, getting to like watch these events happen with people in a documentary, it is the bar. Like a great performance is a bar, but a higher bar is what do real people look like when everything's melting down around them.”

“And oh, Allan King, oh so important for me when I was student, studied in art school in Paris and I discovered Warrendale. Warrendale, the way he's doing that movie, I don't understand how we can do this when we get inside that place, very special because it's like an orphelinat and the children doesn't want to wake up and so the idea just of the first scene is so incredible. I watched the Warrendale just before doing Anatomy and I show some scenes to Milo, my the child who are playing in my movie, and yes, it was very interesting. I love so much to mix, to show sometimes some documentary, sometimes some movies, yes.”
