Kagemusha

“So this is the Shadow Warrior, Kurosawa. I mean, everything he ever did is great as far as I know, but he also is one of those great artists who is still trying to find new ways to do what he does in his old age and is embracing grand themes. Speaking of Shakespeare, he's super Shakespearean. He's very into the big Shakespearean questions of life and how it should be lived and what are how do we atone for past actions and all these kinds of things. It's quite long, Kurosawa is not shy about taking as long as he needs to, but I will absolutely watch Kagemusha, and so should you.”

“I think for my last, I mean I could be here for quite literally seven hours, so I think what I'm going to do is just close my eyes and pick, but I think I'm going to go on this wall because there are some older movies that I have not seen on this wall, and so I'm going to just close the eyes, I'm going to just close the eyes and... Kagemusha, Kurosawa. It's time. I have not seen it, it is time I watch it.”

“Kagemusha in Blu-ray. I cannot resist this. I mean, Kurosawa is just such a master and if ever you make a movie and you have rain or snow or anything, just don't do it before you see all of the Kurosawas and study and read how he produced weather. And then you can go and make a movie with rain. But just don't do it without consulting Kurosawa.”

“The other film I’m thinking about, because I work in Japan a lot: Kurosawa’s Kagemusha. There’s whole areas of this film where most of the color is army, khaki color, and then these… these electrifying bursts of red. So as a fashion designer, you can imagine you’re like this, and then suddenly you’ve got a bright color suddenly sitting on top of a very neutral base. So, even if you don’t understand it, even if you switch the sound off, it’s amazing. But don’t do either of those things.”
