Eclipse Series 12: Aki Kaurismäki’s Proletariat Trilogy

“One of the most funny directors that we need in our lives, Aki Kaurismäki. The Match Factory Girl, so important for me, also in my journey with The Chambermaid. Aki, keep being with that strange, funny filmmaking spirit, total anarchist.”

“Another one of my favorite series that he did is this DVD down here called the Proletariat Trilogy. This these three films have become three of my favorite movies in the last couple years. I have to give a shout out to my friend Melissa Messer for first showing me Shadows in Paradise, which is jumped into my top 10.”

“It's just because we know very little Aki Kaurismäki's work again.”

“I wanted to find some… some maybe… Yes, some Kaurismäki films. He’s one of the greatest poets and greatest geniuses of the history of cinema. He used to say, “In my country in winter, days are short, it’s all night, so we are sad, so we drink. But in summer, days are long, we are happy, so we drink.””

“Aki Kaurismäki. I saw this – The Match Factory Girl and a bunch of these – when I was in college, and they’re hilarious, but they’re uniquely hilarious. There’s nothing quite like these movies and the deadpan nature of the humor. But besides the humor, they’re beautiful. There’s colors in this movie that are super different than what you typically see. The performances are amazing. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry. Kaurismäki, always a winner.”
